This is Tony Butcher, the person who writes the quirky match reports for Cod Almighty, the Grimsby Town online fanzine, that you’ve probably read.
He’s been producing his meandering musings on Mariners’ matches for more than a quarter of a century now – first via a vast world-wide email distribution list (which was an early precursor to ‘The Electronic Fishcake’) and later Cod Almighty since 2002.
Tony’s match reports have a style all of their own and many Town fans enjoy reading his eccentric take on games. Rather than mere reports, Tony sees them as impressionist sketches with lots of cultural references thrown in to lighten and distract and hopefully entertain those who crack the code. He’s never wanted to just tell the story of what happens during the 90 minutes of play. Instead, he’s been interested in how we, the people, see the game and remember moments. Football is about more than the goals and the misses and Tony gets that more than most.
Tony’s first Mariners game was in 1973 when he saw the League Cup second round replay against Luton Town with his mate and his Dad. The game had little impact on young Tony and he only made the occasional trip to Blundell Park with his Sheffield United supporting Grandad during his formative years. In fact, it wasn’t until he was living and working in Watford that he eventually got the bug. His awakening was partly due to the team’s attractive pass and move style under Alan Buckley but also because they represented the town that would always be his home.
Tony – along with his partner, Sue – has been following the Mariners religiously for the last 30 years, both home and away. In fact, as residents of Lincoln, they have clocked up a serious amount of miles over the years!
The Pontoon season ticket holder’s favourite memory at Blundell Park is a toss-up between Ivano’s belter against the returning Buckley’s West Brom in 1995 (when he injured himself heading the top of the Pontoon) or the ejection of the Boston manager Steve Evans in 2006. However, he believes that there’s nothing better than a full BP under the lights.
