Lloyd Griffith is a well-known comedian, presenter, actor, and classically trained singer… but he’s also a huge Town supporter.
He’s been a regular at Blundell Park for the last 30 years – basically because of one man, John Cockerill. The former Mariners midfielder worked at his school and he used to coach the football team in which Lloyd was an aspiring young goalkeeper. Cockers was also the reason why a 9-year-old Lloyd first set foot inside Blundell Park, to attend his testimonial against Southampton. A few years later, Lloyd’s auntie’s boyfriend started taking him in the Pontoon and that’s where he learned some of the more ‘authentic’ Grimsby Town chants and got to see the likes of Mendonca and Bonetti strut their stuff.
As a teenager, Lloyd used to sit with his friend from Sixth Form, Brendan, in the Main Stand. However, because Brendan was so tall, the pair had to sit at the back and squint to see the pitch! Lloyd went to Exeter University to train as a classical choral singer and began developing a name for himself on the comedy circuit. A decade on from becoming a professional comedian, he’s performed countless sell-out shows, made numerous TV appearances, and even became the host of Sky Sports’ flagship Saturday morning show, Soccer AM, for two seasons, where he proudly mentioned the Mariners whenever he could.
Over the years, Lloyd has been fortunate to do what all Town fans would like to and meet lots of players – many of whom he’s become pretty close friends with. It all started when Nick Hegarty used to lodge with Lloyd and his mum in their house on Isaac’s Hill. He also got to know many of the 2016 promotion-winning team including Padraig Amond, Craig Disley, Shaun Pearson and James McKeown. He will, however, always share a special relationship with Town striker Lenell John-Lewis after the pair starred in the club’s parody John Lewis Christmas advert in 2014. Although Lloyd lives in London and his job means he can be anywhere in the county, you’ll more often than not spot Lloyd with his mum at Blundell Park on a matchday.
