One Of Our Own - Single

Steve Wraith

If there was ever somebody you could describe as being part of the furniture at Blundell Park, it’s Steve Wraith.

Steve started out as a fresh-faced 18 year-old Accounts Assistant in March 1985 before quickly rising to Accounts Manager, a title he held for 30+ years before recently becoming the club’s new Finance Manager. That means he’s responsible for managing all the financial matters associated with Grimsby Town FC; income, expenditure, invoicing, wages, reporting and basically checking everything that’s coming in and going out. But things could have turned out very differently for Steve after the club actually gave him the wrong time for his interview back in 1985! After waiting an hour after an erroneous time slot, then Club Secretary and future boss Bernard Fleming and two of the Directors took pity on young Steve for waiting in the foyer of the Findus Stand after the error and they all had the interview there and then in the little office - the one Steve now calls his own.

In addition to his Account Manager job, Steve also acted as the main point of contact with the promotions department at the Grimsby Telegraph for many years and was the brains behind campaigns such as ‘Kids For a Quid’, ‘Pack The Park’ and ‘Be There or Blue Square’ to name a few. He also once devised a ‘Who Wants To Be a Millionaire’ inspired quiz for a game against Manchester City because the demand for tickets from the visiting supporters far outweighed the 1,800 or so which could fit in the Osmond Stand. People wanting to buy tickets over the phone had to ‘prove’ they were a Town fan (rather than a City fan in disguise) by answering questions on the history of GTFC. The stunt received the club, and Steve, national attention when he was interviewed on TalkSport about the quirky initiative and a slapstick photo of him answering multiple telephones with wires wrapped around his neck appeared on the front of the Grimsby Evening Telegraph and in the national press.

Regulars to Blundell Park will probably recognise Steve as the guy who walks around the back of each stand on a matchday with a very old hand-made black and white box, collecting entry information from every turnstile   the attendance and to get a sneaky look at the game...and who can blame him? Over the years Steve has been present at over 1,000 home games and he thinks he’s seen every single Premier League and Football League Club play the Mariners except Manchester United during his time. So, if we get to the third round of the FA Cup next season, no prizes for wondering who Steve will be hoping for now...

"But there's none to compare with my Grimsby"

One Of Our Own is a collaboration between Grimbarians and GTFC to celebrate and shine a light on the unseen heroes that make the club tick.
