Andy Carr

For almost two decades Andy Carr was Mighty Mariner, Town’s beloved mascot. Back in 2000, when he was in charge of entertainment at Cleethorpes Leisure Centre, Andy was asked to fill the role on a temporary basis – little did he know he’d be doing it the next 18 years!

When he wore the iconic costume, he made ‘Mighty’ one of the most talked about mascots in football due to his penchant for winding up visiting supporters. While other mascots merely walked around the pitch and waved, Mighty (or should we say Andy), would often be found gyrating against a goal post in front of the away end!

Andy brought a lot more to Mighty’s persona than just the frolicking about though. He also understood the importance of engaging with young supporters on a matchday and he would often give up his time to make sure the mascot made guest appearances in the wider community.

His proudest moment as mascot was when he got to lead out the Mariners ahead of their 3-1 victory against Wrexham in March 2014 with his 3 month old daughter, Lottie, and 7 year-old Lucy Sutton who sadly passed away just a few weeks after the game.

Long before he became Mighty Mariner, Andy started watching Town in the late 80s when Alan Buckley was building the side who would take the club from the fourth to the second division. Back then, he used to sit on a bar in the Lower Findus Stand when it was a terrace before moving across to the Main Stand where he still sits with his Dad today.

Over the years, he’s enjoyed so many memorable moments at Blundell Park, including the game Ivano Bonetti scored the winner against West Brom, the 6-5 win against Burnley in 2002 and the night Jean- Paul Kalala’s goal knocked Spurs out of the League Cup.

Now Andy has hung up the Mighty costume once and for all, he’s looking forward to making some more memories away from the spotlight… and the visiting fans!
