One Of Our Own - Single

John Moore

Anyone who’s ever watched the club’s match highlights will instantly recognise this man’s voice. John Moore has been commentating on Town games for almost 40 years and his beautifully authentic reaction to goals and significant moments during matches has made him a club institution. Phrases like “Crikey”, “It’s a nasty one” and “Oh, yes” will forever be synonymous with John’s passionate commentaries.

John has been a key part of the media team that’s been capturing footage of Grimsby Town since the mid 80s when they used to film games from the empty television gantry at the top of the newly built Findus Stand for former Town boss Dave Booth. A few years down the line, the club saw the commercial potential of their footage and began selling the VHS tapes of the games in the club shop.

Eventually the process evolved into the production of end of season compilation videos which were the only way supporters could relive matches at home during the 1990s.

It might be hard to believe, but the 67 year-old was only a little over 30 when he first started commentating on Mariners games. One of his first was the famous 1-0 win against Everton in the League Cup in November 1984, and since then, his hobby has taken him and his camera crew colleagues – Martin Wilson, Graham Shearsmith and Roly Godfrey – all over the country watching Town.

John started going to games in the late 60s with his friend Steve Higgins, the son of Town trainer George Higgins. Back then his favourite players were the likes of Ron Green, Brian Hill, Doug Collins, Dave Boylen and, of course, Matt Tees. In the 70s John became a season ticket holder in the Main Stand and he was in his old seat to see Town lift the Third Division title in 1979-80. For the last 38 years though, John hasn’t needed a seat from his position on the gantry!

John is a Mariner through and through and he firmly believes that if he wasn’t commentating on the games, he’d still be coming to Blundell Park as a fan and sitting in his old seat.

"But there's none to compare with my Grimsby"
