Mike Phillips has been a groundsman at Blundell Park since June 1980, first joining as a 16 year-old on a YTS Scheme.
Mike’s grandad used to be in the building trade and was friends with the club’s maintenance man at the time, Eddie Snowlin. After hearing through the grapevine that the club was looking for an apprentice to assist the groundsman, Frank Bridge, following promotion to the Second Division, Mike was offered the position by secretary Mr Dowse and started bright and early the following Monday morning!
Over the next 13 years, Mike learned the trade until Frank reached retirement age in 1993 and he stepped into the shoes of the much-loved groundsman. For almost 30 years, Mike has prepared the Blundell Park playing service ahead of every game and his work during the 90s earned the club a reputation for having one of the best pitches outside of the Premier League. In recent years, Mike has also had to maintain Cheapside and the Academy facilities at Oasis Wintringham Academy, but last year he received some much-needed support when Martin Deans joined the club as the new Senior Head Groundsman.
In 1970, Mike went to his first Mariners game with his stepdad and stood in the Boys’ Paddock. After enjoying his first taste of live football, Mike received a season ticket for his birthday and became a regular throughout the 70s until he was offered the apprentice Groundsman position. You’ll no doubt spot Mike before and after the game today, repairing divots and tending to patches of unearthed grass, just like he has done for the last 42 years.
