One Of Our Own - Single

Brian Doughty

Brian Doughty has been coming to Blundell Park week in, week out for more than 60 years.

He was taken to his first game by his uncle Gordon back in 1957 and he remembers standing in the Osmond Stand and watching the Mariners in the old Second Division. As a youngster he developed into a fully-fledged supporter during his time spent in ‘Boys’ Paddock’ or by sneaking in through the Main Stand gates for the second half of games! From those areas of the ground, he was lucky enough to see some excellent players in their pomp, including Ron Rafferty, Ron Cockeril and Northern Ireland’s World Cup star Johnny Scott.

Brian began going to home games more regularly in the mid 60s after he was employed as an apprentice Rigger on Grimsby docks. Then after a few years plying his trade, he got a job at Huntsman Tioxide and he stayed there for 28 years until he took early retirement in 2004. In 1990, a golden era in the club’s recent history under Alan Buckley, Brian started going to away games too and that’s when he met his future wife, Pat, who helped supporters on the club’s disabled supporters coach. Over the next two decades, the pair travelled the length and breadth of the country following the Mariners and they got to share many special memories together – both Wembley appearances in ‘98 and the victory at Anfield are just a few of those.

After losing his beloved wife Pat in 2014 (the year she won the club’s first ‘GTFC Supporter of The Year’ award), Brian continued watching the Mariners, but now with his friends Sarah Winterton, Jayne Boyington, Steph Hurst, Carl Heslop, Steve Bloy and Steve Kirby. The group still follow Town together, either from their seats in the Pontoon or via the Away Travel Club run by Terry Hall. Unfortunately, Brian hasn’t been able to make it to an away game since December due to his cancer diagnosis, but he remains as much as a regular at Blundell Park as he always has for the past 65 years. And long may that continue!

"But there's none to compare with my Grimsby"

One Of Our Own is a collaboration between Grimbarians and GTFC to celebrate and shine a light on the unseen heroes that make the club tick.
