Shahram Shadan was born and raised in the Grimsby area, and Will Douglas – the grandson of the late town clerk, Frederick Ward – spent 40 years in London before making the move to the town five years ago. The two friends joined forces and together, they are bringing craft brewing back to Grimsby.
Will and Shahram were introduced to the partners behind Axholme Brewing Company – the creators of the much-loved Cleethorpes Pale Ale – by Charles Lumley, owner of Cleethorpes’ independent beer shop, Message in a Bottle. The team put their expertise, dedication, and passions into the North Lincolnshire Brewery, helping to expand their range and get their craft beers into shops, bars, and pubs across the region, from Lincolnshire Co-ops to a venue in Hull. It wasn’t long before a new home was needed.
In 2017, it was announced that Grimsby would have its first brewery for 50 years. Will and Shahram had acquired the 120-year-old former St Barnabas Church in King Edward Street, a place that was once the heart of Grimsby’s docker community. It was the perfect location for the investment; Will and Shahram could have chosen a modern, purpose-built facility, but instead, they’ve put their blood, sweat, and tears into the transformation of an important part of Grimsby’s heritage, becoming a major player in the ground-breaking regeneration of the town.
This passion for Grimsby, its heritage, and its future is reflected in the brewery’s new brand, Docks Beers. Three new canned beers have already begun brewing here; Hard Graft, Graveyard Shift, and Never Say Die. The names and branding pay homage to Grimsby’s story.
On Wednesday 3rd October, Docks Beers Brewery will open to the public, where craft ale enthusiasts can purchase the range, enjoy a beer in the tap room and watch the brewery in action.
In recent years, Grimsby’s profile has seen a change with a wave of positivity thanks to local people's dedication and a growing faith in the area.
Grimbarians is more than a not-for-profit organisation. It is a creative movement, born to change the story line of the town and the way people identify the area.
Through documenting and showcasing the lives of local people, we aim to promote confidence in the area, increase pride and build a stronger, more positive reputation for Great Grimsby because #grimsbyreallyismore.
