SUMMER 2023
In Partnership With
Our Home is an exhibition of Grimsby-based artists (and a couple from elsewhere in the North East) exploring topics like heritage, inheritance and identity. Essentially, creating conversations around what it means to call this place home, in the past, present and future. Well worth a visit this month!
In June 2023, Our Big Picture commissioned 5 artists to explore Our Future Heritage as part of a pilot project funded by Grimsby Creates. The exhibition (which is located inside Our Big Picture) features artists; Michael Burkitt, Molly Gee, Frances Hodson, Soul Roberts, and Alice May Stewart.
The exhibition includes the short film '100 years' which features the stories of people living across North East Lincolnshire, answering one question: What do you want people to know about Grimsby in 100 years from now? The film is a fascinating insight for Grimbarians in the year 2123 as well as for anyone interested in the town. Scunthorpe-born artist Michael said he learned a lot about the town and it's people creating the film.
'The Colours of Grimsby' challenging the 'grim' perceptions of the town. Showcasing a colourful set of posters and postcards which have been colour-matched to each of their iconic locations by members of the public. 'MOVE THRU YOU (WIP)' is an ongoing, moving story crafted from 8 Grimsby narratives, exploring fictional and non-fictional stories, from our past and future. Ultimately an incomplete story with no answers, only experiences, questions and reflections.
The last two (and by no means least) are fantastic examples of traditional artforms brought into the modern era with respect and sincerity. 'The Garden Of GY Delights' is a set of 3 hand-knitted patchwork tapestries, with 9 knitted pieces by the artist in addition to squares created by community of local knitters. Depicting the fishing history of Grimsby in both the imagery and the fisherman's-jumper style of material across the work, an homage to them all.
Finally, Molly Gee's 'Skinned' is a collection of photos and stories about the long tradition of tattooing in Grimsby. From it's iconic maritime ties with swallows, anchors and Ross Panthers, to the town's legendary tattooists like Bill Holloway and Winnie Ayres who helped push the artform as well as the local industry forward.
In conclusion the exhibition has been a great success so far and is well worth a visit in person, especially for anyone interested in heritage and identity in the town. All of the artists did a great job creating conversations around how people in the town see themselves and how they want to be seen in the future.
If you want to check out the exhibition at Our Big Picture, the visiting times are 11am-3pm, Wednesday - Saturday and ends on the 30th of September.
