Francesca Young
From her studio based on the Humberston Fitties, Francesca, an award-winning artist, creates vivid, distinctive illustrations that showcase the liveliness and character of Grimsby and Cleethorpes.
Francesca Young is rapidly becoming one of Grimsby's most popular young artists. Her depictions of the towns landmarks instil a sense of pride in the past and present and adorn the walls of countless homes in Grimsby and further afield.
Francesca’s piece captures the heart and heritage of the Port of Grimsby, the harshness of the fishermen’s environments but the welcome sight of the Dock Tower leading them home - we love it!
“Growing up in Cleethorpes I have always been a little obsessed with the historic imagery found here; the promenade, the amusements, the pier all surrounded by old and slightly crooked buildings with so much character.
"Through watercolour and pen my aim is to create vibrant, imagined scenes of the local area in a lively, distinctive and illustrative style. Although the paintings are based on the buildings seen today, I like to piece my favourite places together so they lie somewhere between reality and imagination.
"Exaggerated colours also add to this dreamy state, of trying to capture the history within the modern landscape of today’s seaside town.” Francesca says.
"I started sketching in some rough waves and an idea started to form; a trawler bracing the stormy seas, the fishermen seeing the Dock Tower and knowing that they are home. It felt like the perfect homage to Grimsby’s heritage."
