Creative Start uses the power of art and creativity to provide support to people in abstinence-based recovery and those facing mental health issues.

The CIC was established by Grimbarian Sam Delaney almost 10 years ago, who had himself used art to help him through the recovery process.

You will find Creative Start’s murals across Grimsby, including the St James Underpass in the town centre and the Kasbah regeneration on Grimsby Docks.

To find out more about their initiatives, their workspaces, and their community, read Sam’s Grimbarians profile or take a look at creativestartcic.org

You’ll find that Creative Start have an incredibly distinctive style, which is why we’re excited to be launching Artist in Residence with Sam and the team – starting with their artwork, ‘Adockalypse Now’.

For many who worked on Grimsby Docks in the past, it represented much more than a place of work – it was a community, bringing people together for generations. This is why the restoration of the Kasbah heritage zone has been much anticipated, so these “truly unique” historic buildings can experience a new lease of life. It seems fitting that the organisation kickstarting this regeneration is Creative Start. Established in 2012 by Grimbarian Sam Delaney, Creative Start is a community of supportive peers encouraging people going through addiction recovery and with mental health issues, providing creative, hands-on projects. ‘The Great Escape’ is the team’s latest workspace and will serve the local community as a place to build their own creative projects.
